Dr. Boucher has been in a private optometric practice in Laramie, Wyoming since 1966, specializing in cornea and contact lenses and general practice. He received his Doctor of Optometry degree from Southern College of Optometry and a Masters of Science Degree in physiological optics from Indiana University. He has two honorary degrees, Doctor of Ocular Science from New England College of Optometry and Southern College of Optometry. He is a Diplomate in Corneal and Contact Lenses of the American Academy of Optometry. He is a past chair of the American Optometric Association Contact Lens and Cornea Section. He also served eighteen years on the Food and Drug Ophthalmic Device Panel as a panel member and consultant. For his outstanding service he was awarded the Harvey W. Wiley Medal and the Food and Drug Administration Commissioner’s Special Citation. Dr. Boucher has been the Principal Investigator on over 150 FDA clinical studies on ophthalmic devices and drugs, as well as being the author of numerous professional publications.

Dr. Boucher served in the Wyoming State Legislature. He has been a member and chair of many advisory committees to the Wyoming Department Health and University of Wyoming College of Health Sciences. He has also been a trustee of the Wyoming Hospital Association and a member and president of the Board of Trustees of the Albany County Hospital District. He is a past president of the Wyoming Optometric Association.

At the national level, he served on the American Optometric Association Board of Trustees and was a member and chair of the Accreditation Council on Optometric Education responsible for the accreditation of the schools and colleges of optometry nationwide.

In recognition of his lifetime achievements and contributions to the profession of optometry, Dr. Boucher was inducted into the National Optometry Hall of Fame in 2012.

 

Dr. James A. Boucher founded Snowy Range Vision Center in 1966 and practiced optometry for 50 years before his retirement in 2016. Some of the many highlights from his illustrious career include:

  • Founder, National Academies of Practice
  • Inducted into the National Optometry Hall of Fame in 2012

Dr. Boucher passed away in September 2020. The doctors and staff at Snowy Range Vision Center are fortunate to have known such an incredible man. He was a visionary, leader, mentor and friend. We will always remember and honor his legacy.
